View Thread: stumped about hondas?

mrgokou
I'm not much of a Honda fan, but i read somewhere that there are major differneces in the Acura RSX and the RSX typs S. Can any of you "Car gods", tell me the exact differences in the engines?
:fro:

Dreamn
lots of tuning

masestylez
Ask RSXDriver :D, other than that I have no idea. I wouldn't mind owning one though for a fwd car.

911GT2
Higher state of tune. That and i-VTEC.

raska
I think the 11.0:1 over 9.8:1 compression ratio does most of it. Most of the rest of the engine is the same. 911, aren't all the new VTEC honda's using i-VTEC?

masestylez
AFAIK that is true, what was the first vehicle with i-VTEC? I'd dare say the RSX maybe? I just found out today they made an AWD CRV, I had no idea Honda made any sort of AWD passenger vehicle.

Nah, the Si coupe still uses VTEC. Think that may be it though.

Does the base RSX have it??

masestylez
According to Honda the 2003 Si uses i-VTEC. So does the base RSX.

911GT2
You have a different Si. We have a coupe and a hatch, the coupe uses the 127hp VTEC engine and the SiR (hatch) uses the 160 hp i-VTEC plant.

raska
I was under the impression that all newly designed honda vtec engines were making use of i-VTEC.

911GT2
They are. The Si coupe is the last of the non i-VTECs.

Has the same engine i have in my Civic (127hp 1.7L VTEC).

There's 115hp (no VTEC, in DX/LX models), the 127hp (VTEC in the old EX, which is now the Si coupe) and the 160hp i-VTEC (SiR and base RSX).

mrgokou
Here in the US , the i-vtec.. or the K series engins are slowly being realesed. First the low-tuned i-vtec int eh RSX base. Then the powerful RSX typs S i-vtec. Then came the Civic Si, which is the same of the RSx Base. Now the New Accord is driven by an i-vtec, and so is the new honda element. The 4wd element only though.

RSXDriver
Okay...

All the RSX and Civic Si engines have i-VTEC.

The differences between the Type S and the base model pretty much amount to tuning--exhaust, intake, redline, and where the i-VTEC is applied.

Base model

160 HP @ 6500 RPM
141 lb-ft torque @ 4000 RPM
6800 RPM redline
Compression ratio: 9.8:1

Type S

200 HP @ 7400 RPM
142 lb-ft torque @ 6000 RPM
7900 RPM redline
Compression ratio: 11.0:1

Gear Ratios

Five Speed Manual (Base model)
1st: 3.267
2nd: 1.880
3rd: 1.212
4th: 0.921
5th: 0.738

Six Speed Manual (Type S)
1st: 3.267
2nd: 2.130
3rd: 1.517
4th: 1.147
5th: 0.921
6th: 0.738

On the Base model, "the VTEC modulation of i-VTEC works on the intake valves exclusively, using a 2-rocker arm design. At lower rpm, the second intake valve opens only partially, creating a desirable swirl effect in the combustion chamber. At higher rpm, both intake valves open fully, for quicker, easier breathing and full power output."

On the Type S, "an exclusive 3-rocker-arm design operates on both the intake and exhaust valves. At lower rpm all valves open to a lower profile that changes to a higher profile, with a longer duration, at higher rpm."

Now a little something about i-VTEC.

"In addition to controlling lift and duration, like other VTEC systems, the "intelligent" i-VTEC™system uses Variable Timing Control (VTC) to adjust "camshaft phasing." By varying oil pressure, VTC can continuously vary intake timing relative to the engine's exhaust timing. The result of i-VTEC is improved response and enhanced performance at low engine speeds and efficiency across a broad power band."

There are also some suspension tweaks the Type S has over the Base model, as well as standard equipment levels.

*Most of this information was taken right off the Acura.com webpage.

When the RSX came out, the whole model line was the first to have i-VTEC. Then the Civic Si came out, and basically has the same engine as the base RSX, just detuned to have 132 lb-ft of torque @ 5,000 RPM.

Also, the Element has i-VTEC in both 2WD and 4WD variants.

911GT2
RSX, perhaps you chose not to read my post.

Canada gets different Civics than you do. We get the DX,LX, Si Coupe, Si Hatch, and a Acura offshoot (the EL).

DX and LX gets the 115hp non-VTEC engine, the Si coupe and the 1.7EL gets the 127hp VTEC powerplant, and the Si Hatch gets the base RSX i-VTEC 160hp engine.

RSXDriver
No, I read it.

87 Supra Turbo
Okay, just to make sure we are all on the same page here, in Canada we have two Si's.

As 911GT2 said, there is the Si coupe which has the 127hp VTEC engine, then there's the SiR or Si hatch that has the 160hp i-VTEC engine.

Heres the regular line of Civic specs (http://www.honda.ca/HondaEng/Models/CivicCoupe/features.asp) for Canada, and here are the specs (http://www.honda.ca/HondaEng/Models/CivicSiR/features.asp) for our SiR or Si Hatch model.

I actually feel sorry for Honda now. Because although, the new K-series engine are hondas new breakthrough engine, they are really nothing special. It's quite near impoosible to extract real power fromn the RSX base or the Civic Si.
So far the RSX type S is the only useful K-series engine. I've seen very sufficient gaine from it. I't possible to get 350 horese from the engine with a suercharger and a good shot of Nitrous. And this is the american spec Type-S.

masestylez
I saw a 400hp non-nitrous somewhere around the net. Although I don't claim it as fact

RSXDriver
It's likely a trailer queen.

mrgokou
i doubt 400 non-nitrous.

the one i've seen though, I think it was about 18 miles to the gallon... which isn't bad if u think about it. 350 horses and 18 miles to the gallon in an RSX, that sounds pretty nice to me.
