View Thread: Magnetic Ski rack

I do not have a great deal of room inside my car, and roof racks are expenseive, but on the way home the other day i saw these things stuck to the top of some dudes car so i looked it up and low and behold, magnetic ski racks.

really cool idea in my opinion, the best looking one i found was at http://www.etonrack.com/ so really i'm wondering if anyone has any experience with these things and if they're worth getting, or should i just save up and get a real roof rack

looks like they work to me, get em biatch.

NightRider
bought it, see if it works :\ *crosses finger*

Sounds really cool, assuming it's easy (un-suction) to get them off!

what about a snowboard rack like that? I'd love to get a set for the s4. (after I get a set of rims and winter tires).

The company i bought it from does not have a snowboard rack, but i found one at http://www.brookstone.com/shop/product.asp?product_code=317859 that didnt look too bad.

Scratched paint here we come!

That looks like a really bad idea.

supposed to have some kind of magnet infused rubber, with a suction cup, so its not like slamming a big solid magnet on the roof or anything

shipped today 3 days till i know if it'll demolish my car and my skiis

Well, if i ever do get snows...the avus wheels will be my winter wheels, and the whatever rims I get would be the summer ones.

So...NO. :fro:

They still have straps going around the inside of the car though...the whole point is for them to look clean, or else I'll just get the kind that goes around the inside roof.

Sia Bani
Actually, I guess its fine since it looks like other brands don't have the strap that brookstone has.

the straps are for the paranoid people in case the magnet and stuff comes off, so that you dont loose you stuff and get it run over by a truck

Try this Canadian ski rack mounting trick. Use the ones with suction cups, but apply vaseline( yeah petroleum jelly ) to the cups. Won't mark the paint, and holds like baby doo-doo to a blanket. Suction cups are much better than any metal or magnetic thingy, won't mar the paint, of course you have to use the gutter clamps also, as a back up.

OR.......you simply put the skiis in the car. My wife's 2002 Pontiac Sunfire has loads of room with the rear seat folded down. Unless your skiis are longer than 7.5 feet?

My car actually has a ski pouch that comes through the trunk into the rear passenger armrest. I snowboard though.

The only thing about suction cups is that they lose their suction after awhile. I wouldn't want to find out when their suction is lost while on the highway...

thanks for the tips though.

i wish my car had fold down seats, heck i'd just take the rear seats out, if the engine, and abs computers were not screwed directly to them

I wouldn't want to have the snowboards inside though. I'd rather have them nicely on top.

i'm not a really big fan of putting stuff on top of the car, rocks and stuff flying around might hit my skiis and thats a bummer, rather have the skiis inside, in a ski bag, and they're harder to steal inside, also inside the car == free

Magnetic racks were taken off the market here because they lose their grip...

And I have a regular Thule rack, works awesome. Expensive though.

My skis got rusty on the trip from NS to Tremblant (~13 hour drive). All surface rust, but still...

NightRider
from what i read in the reviews its got a magnet and a suction cup, and it stays on for days if you want it to.. I know that they really just want to sell the things, but its either that or have to go and borrow my mothers -tarus- so i can use the fold down rear seats, and i'd rather not sit in those seats for an hour let alone four or five. worth a shot, and there is a 100% garuantee return policy, so i cant really lose... unless my skiis get wrecked that is.

A friend of mine had em, and he used them fine. But they started to get less magnetic.

like they worked for a while then got less magnetic?

i'd totally expect that to happen.

Yep. When they took it off the market they stopped using it though.

hmm, real racks are a couple hundred dollars, and i dont plan on having my car much longer, but if i get a nice car in the summer, i'd be likely to get a real rack.

Yeah, mine cost a couple hundred, but it's adjustable so it's all good.

and you can put bikes, and canoes and those big trunks and all kinds of stuff in a real rack
