View Thread: Boxster vs. RX-8 vs. 350z vs. S2K vs. 'Vette vs. CLK

Ok Fellas. I need some help. My dad is looking to make a purchase of a "sports car". He's currently considering the following:

Boxster
RX-8
350 Z Convertible
CLK320
S2K
'Vette

Needless to say the CLK is out of its element in the above stated group. What I'm looking for is your input into the various models and what give the best deal for the money. Until today he was very impressed with the Boxterl; he oggled the RX-8 today. Now he's leaning in that direction. The range he's looking at is between 50K and 52K.

What do you guys think is the best combination of performance and comfort that would appeal to a 63 yr old retiree? He's going to keep it at the "winter house" so it'd only be driven 4-5 months out of the year...

Are you sure you typed that price range in there right? That's a lot higher than what we were talking about over AIM the other day. He could buy a couple of those cars for that much :D

Out of that list I would buy the Corvette. That's mostly because it is SO much faster than the rest of the bunch but I also really like the design. The new one looks pretty amazing too.

I like the RX-8 and knowing your dad it would probably fit his needs pretty well. If he's not looking for a straight line rocket but just something that would be fun to drive, that would fit pretty well.

BUT, he's a former Z guy so the Z vert would be pretty cool. I would probably rather have that over the RX-8. And then you guys could be the cool father/son team that both owns Z's! :D

or a 350z plus 20k in mods :sarah:

He's really centering on the RX-8 and I can't even get him to test drive the 'Vette...well, not yet anyway. That may change. He jacked up his range after loking at the Boxter...he's really impressed with it...BTW..there is a GT2 parked right next to it at HBL...used...its going for 228K.....

I've a feeling that for an older guy the boxter would be one of the best matches. Decent preformance, fun, and very comfortable.

VETTE! Nothing better than a V-8. And C&D acctually recomends the auto over the 6 speed. Autos are good for old people.

I find that hard to belive, C&D rarely ever recomends an auto over a manual, exceot in the case of a cvt. I find this espically hard because the six speed in the vette is the T-56 Tremec, which is one of the best gearboxes out there.

My dad is more partial to a manual if it is in a sports car. He won't even consider an auto. Problem is that my mom has to have a big say in thos thing since it will be their only winter car. She can drive stick but I'm not sure se'll be able to get in and out of the boxster.....

Nice avatar....

Does anyone know if the 350z and the RX-8 are still having engine problems??

Amir M. Fathi
This is Sia..ignore the name.

C6!

As for engine problems..if you mean the rx-8 being way underpowered as a problem, then yup!

Does he care for luxury or does he want a raw performance car? I think if he doesn't want something as raw as the c6 then he should go for the 350z convert.

I saw the new s2000, it looks really good, but if he should get the vette over the s2000.

CLK-GTR
arent those cars alittle out of their depth compared to the vette if its a sports car hes after?

although if hes after more than just performance you wont beat the porsche, especially if its an S. For that money though couldnt he get something like an M3 or maybe a used M5/E55?

Lotus
fuck the vette!! unless of course he just wants preformance, which i doubt. I say 350, or boxter. They are fast, not stupid fast like the vette, but still faster than most people can handle, yet they have the style and image the the vette lacks.

Whats with everyone jaunting the Vette lately?

When a Vette passes you, you mean to tell me you dont look twice? You never look at a picture of Vette and say damn I wish I could afford one? How about a Vette with Borla exhaust, doesnt it sound amazing?

There stop knocking the Corvette!!

Damn, lots of nice cars in that group, so no matter which he'll be getting a nice car. If it were for me, I'd probably be tempted to go w/ the vette. BUT what all these youngsters are forgetting is that the guy is 63 years old. Vettes are LOW--he may have a time getting in and out of it. Hell, I'm in my 30's and there are some cars *I* think are a pain in the ass to get in and out of...

For an older person (not that he's SUPER old, but you know what I mean--I'm thinking of my parents who are in their 50's) I think the porshe or maybe even the MB would be a better fit. Not the cutting edge performance but enough and some comfy and prestige. If he's a former Z guy the nostalgia might be nice, but they sit semi low too don't they? The rx-8 is actually supposed to get some ok marks for having a surprisingly comfy ride for the handling abilities...

I dunno, in that scenario I'm sort of leaning porsche...

im not knocking the vette, but everyone here seems to think it is a god, and perfect for all situations, its not. The vette is a great sports car, but is it better than a boxter for a 63 year old??? probably not.

My dad isn't really concerned with accessibility, he's willing to squeeze into a small, low slung coupe and cram as much into the last few car driving years he can. His big concern is re-sales so when he can no longer drive the car he can re-sell it.

The only question is then, why not buy a used car?

Also, my mom is the one with the mobility issues, she brok her hip last year, and though she is fine now, she would probably have some difficult in getting in and out of a low slung vehicle. That said, I don't see too many options besides the CLK or the RX-8.

Do you?

I'd also go with either the vette or Boxster. It comes down to whether he likes big torque and size or nimbleness and style. I'd probably lean toward the Boxster. I don't care for convert vettes all too much. I drove a C5 conv. this summer and while it was definately fast, it just was kinda bulky and soft around the edges. The Boxster is a real engaging driver's car.

He's said multiple times he's more interested in handling than in straightline acceleration. He''s not worried about taking the line fast, just the curves...

CLK-GTR
If he wants good resale value hes gotta go German. If he wants the handling too i dont see any other option than the Boxster.

BTW--you've had problems with your Z...?

Naw...I haven't had an issue...well wait..there was a porblem with the tire pressure sensor and their was an issue with it sounding funny with the engine running. I filled up the tires with air and checked the pressure and eventually the sensor light went off..and while I drove for a while the engine sound calmed down too. So, no, not really, but I thought Nissan issued a recall for the 350Z and G35 engines to fix something with it.

Also, how reliable is the Rotary engine? My dad has a concern that he'd have a hard time finding people to work on it (other than the dealer).

Its not terrible, but they arent the strongest engines theyve ever built, which is why they arent racing it properly yet.

Shaman
Give me the 'vette. It's fast enough to race, fun enough to enjoy a back road and comfortable enough to tour north america.

A-Tech
there is no competition. the vette hands down. the z06? holy crap that thing handles like a beast, its fast as shit in a straight line stock and its well put together.

Well, thats the thing w/ the rotary I guess--most garden variety mechanics don't want to touch it. Hell, my mechanic doesn't want much of anything to do w/ my subaru. Its not that they are so unreliable, they just have to be scrupulously maintained. Plus they use oil as part of the process, so you really need to stay on top of how much oil you've burned and check it all the time.

A-Tech
who works on it? the mazda dealer.

scubie02
who works on it? the mazda dealer.

Yeah, and chances are that even there there's one "guy" who "works on the rotaries". My subaru dealer has one guy that works on the wrx's basically.

Ok..I talked to my dad and he's narrowed it down to two cars...so without further ado they are:

- Boxter
- CLK

I don't know how someone could be so torn between two diamatrically opposed vehicle concepts, but he is. He's going to go driving this weekend and unfortunately, my marital responsiblities prevent me from going along.

So...as a lesson to all thos people who are single, engaged or thingking about getting married DON'T!! It'll keep away from those test drives.....

A-Tech
maybe he should wait for the new SLK =)

mustangdriver
bah, I still go on test drives! haha

Out of those two I would no doubt go with the Boxster. I mean he already owns a CLK convertible here in VA, it seems kinda boring to have the same car (albeit updated a few years) out in AZ.
