View Thread: Rotary Boy's Hero, Josh Jacquot, wrote a pretty crappy article...

Sia Bani
A guest was browsing one of RB's threads on Fuel and why the west coast only has 91 octane now, etc...and I reread it for kicks. Then I saw him say that Josh Jacquot was his hero...and remembered the name reading an article posted over on Audiworld.

Before you say that I only think the article is crappy because the s4 performed poorly in the "test", be aware that I am a true car enthusiast, appreciate all cars, and remain objective as much as possible.

In any case, please read this article and tell me if you understand why I think, in many repects, the article proves to be crap.

I thought Dave Coleman was RB's hero.

A-Tech
whats so crap about it? the audi was slower everywhere... it lost.

Rotary Boy
first off. my kingdom for coleman.

secondly SCC is probably the least biased car mag on earth.
unless there is a nissan present, so this test is still totally fair.

the S4 lost. great seats though

Overall I didn't mind the article, but I did find two things that I found questionable. First, he spent quite a bit of time going into detail about the EVO and 911, but gave barely a paragraph to the M3 and S4. Same with the driving experiences of the cars.

Secondly, they were making excuses for the EVO which, if you're doing a comparison like this, just isn't acceptable. To me, it drastically reduces the integrity and credibility of the article.

Slightly off the topic of my post, WOW!!!, I wasn't aware of how much torque the S4 made. I'm stunned Audi was able to get that much out of a 4.2 litre engine. That thing must be a blast to drive Sia.

eric
I do think that SCC is a little biased in this article, and I do feel that they should have gone in depth a little more with the other two cars. But then again you have to look at the target audience of the magazine. It's people who are more interested in the EVO than any other of the cars.

Plus I think you're just sore that the Audi lost.

You summed my points soo perfectly, even if you didnt' mean to!!

Let me explain. First off, RB, in that thread I mentioned, you said he was one of your heros. The one you wrote about octane.

The whole comparison, I find, is bs. It is apparent the writer has had extensive testing time with the EVO, and not enough with the other cars. Just look at the 60ft times he got...ridiculous. I won't mention that he's comparing apples to oranges, to kiwi...but that's his right as a writer. He can compare whatever he wants...

Then, he had the initial subjective view that the EVO kicked ass for the money etc. Not good for any comparison to come in biased, which he did...

Excuses, so true. And his super-car for 30k couldn't even break 14 seconds in the 1/4 mile!! And it still won, which I find amazing!

He's off on the vehicle pricing as well. You dont' find an m3 for 47, or an s4 for 45,650.

Your third point, supra...about the torque...WOW, huh? I wish my s4 had 410 lb-ft of torque! Too bad Monsuer Josh Jacqout forgot that in Europe 410nm converts to 302lb-ft of torque!

If he can't get be bothered to get numerical data correct, I can't be bothered to believe his views on 4 entirely different vehicles!

You guys are taking the easy way out by reiterating what I told you was false in my original post. I could care less. I did not buy the s4 as an m3 beater. I would have bought a z06 if I cared purely about performance. ;)

Rotary Boy
couple things wrong with the article

not enough space given to the other cars, it turned into evo+ hypothetical cash plus porsche. which is admittedly queer.

secondly that torque figure for the S4 is off.

third.
goddamn S4's have some massive contact patch. Sia can you burn out at all?

true, not Scc's best article to date. jacquot is the second best driver and the second best writer. he is awesome for doing road tests and I loved his reveiws of the STI and some of the race cars he has driven. but coleman rains supreme.

coleman, jacquot, oldham and holstein are some of the best writers/testers ever though. they are also some serious racers, several of them are semi pro's in more than one type of racing in more than one sanctioning body and they all have roots in competitive karting.

Burn out? No...chirp definitely. (on dry pavement)

eric
RB where does Tiff Needel or Jeremy Clarkson sit in your rankings?

A-Tech
the s4 was still just not as fun to drive apparently, doors creaking in hard turns? no thanks

Good thing this article was written. Now you can be sure not to consider the b6 s4 next time you're car shopping.

Who'd want a 3900lb whale anyway?

A-Tech
you are right, ill stick to my lowly 32k cars instead.

and in what sense are 32k cars lowly?

He was being sarcastic

He was being sarcastic

ahh...It's because of all those LAN parties I miss..I can't seem to get sarcasm without a smiley here or there...

A-Tech
come on now, it wasnt that hard to spot ;)

Rotary Boy
they are lucky bastards and I am a much bigger fan of clarksons, I met him at the ford racing day 2 years ago. he's cool

and sia my exact words were

"in case you didn't know, dave coleman lives a life of duality, magazine editor by day, professional rally driver by night. he, josh jacquot and scott oldham are all racers and magazine editors for SCC, and they are my heros"

eric
I think Clarkson is easily the best writer, and easily one of the funniest automotive journalists around. I wish we got Top Gear over here. I've spent way too much time downloading clips on my computer, and almost bought the DVD, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't play because it's got European encoding.

Yes, so where did I go wrong? Should I have said one of your heros? You did mean him as one of your heros correct?

This isn't about you anyway, but Jacqout...I happened to come by that thread by chance and the name rang a bell...so I looked it up on Audiworld and posted it. Your thread on octane made me post this, so figured I'd tie it in with what you had previously said.

eric
I think Tiff's a great driver too. Better than Clarkson in that dept, but Clarkson is a bit better of an all around journalist.

CLK-GTR
RB where does Tiff Needel or Jeremy Clarkson sit in your rankings?

clarkson great as a journalist, but tiff is maybe the best driver out of all of them, he really knows his stuff when it comes to how a car drives. id listen to his opinion on how a car handles above any other journo.

Topgear is on TV here...but you have to be lucky enough to have a provider that shows it..

Rotary Boy
I was just checking what my words were sia, thats all.

yeah tiff can outdrive clarkson.
but honeslty, if you gave all tiff and coleman two miatas and a roadcourse I think coleman could take down tiff. he's a seriously AMAZINGLY skilled guy behind the wheel. he can rally, road race, top end, motorcycle race, drive sprint cars, you name it.

eric

What channel do you have that shows it? BBC America?

Sia Bani

I don't unfortunately. I was only able to write an email asking for it...damn adelphia.

I know San Diego has a lot of these channels. They've always been ahead of the rest of Cali when it came to cool stuff like Cable internet, car shows, etc.

I've emailed Top Gear a couple of times about their DVD's and other stuff, but I've never gotten a reply.

Sia Bani

That sounds about right....or simply, "the fairy godmother of torque".

eric
how about "he who's torque must not be mentioned"

Rotary Boy
torque.

what the hell is torque, remember, I drive a rotary, I don't know what torque is.

87 Supra Turbo
Come on now, what about the Dodge, Chevy or the new Cobra. They must have at least a little torque right? :D

Sia Bani
