View Thread: Thinking about the Mini alot lately

ksaile
It seems like every month I have a new vehicle that I'm hot for. This month's special is the Mini.

Since my vehicles are paid off, I've been toying with the idea of picking up a fun car lately. First I've been thinking of WRX's but recently I've been really into the Mini Cooper. Their website is great and after configuring the car that I want, the tally comes to around $18,500. That's pretty sweet and about $6,500 less then a WRX that I was looking at.

Here are the specs of what I want. Base Mini Cooper, British Racing green with white roof and white 16" wheels, sport plus suspension, and sport seats. Done. Nice and simple.

Here are the stats,
115 hp
0-60 8.5
125mph top speed
800ft slalom speed 70mph+!
40mpg on the highway

Grass Roots Motorsports has had a lot of succes with their project mini. Apparently the closer ratio gearing of the standard mini really minimizes the horsepower that a Mini Cooper S has on the autocross course. The mini's dominated their classes at the Solo II nationals. They all used stock suspension too. :wow: That just shows how competent these cars are right off of the show room floor.

I've always liked the idea of big performance in a small package. A giant killer. Doing more with less. I want this car.

It would be fun to drive as a daily driver, good in the winter with some snow tires, and I could take it to autocrosses and track days without having to do a thing to it to make it competitive.

That's my day dream recently, what do you guys think?

FabUlous
i love it..........its not a looker like a wrx but it sure catches people off guard.......i would take either one

Do it Do it Do it

I've been beaten by enough Mini's to know that they are the real deal. I love all of the various options you can get it painted in. The BR Green would look fantastic. The aftermarket for these cars is growing like wildfire too.

That's not a lot of dough for such a cool car. And like you said they are fairly practical as daily drivers as well.

How about a JCW Mini? It adds about $2-4k to the price of the S model though. It's worth it with 200 hp and well tuned parts.

Mini Coopers rock!

ksaile
British racing green with a white roof and mirrors. I haven't seen too many in that color.

The other really cool thing is that the resale on these cars is really high still right now, I don't know how long it will last but in today's used car market, that's pretty impressive.

I've emailed the 1 mini dealership in Michigan (in Detroit), and they have yet to email me back yet about what they have in stock. The other dealers all have inventory lists and pictures on line. I might look at some at one of the Chicago dealers.

Those are pretty sweet, but then I'm getting into a whole new price bracket. I'm price sensitive right now. Plus the gas mileage suffers.

Horus
Awesome! Those are extremely fun to drive cars :fro:

Question: would a regular Cooper S fall under your price bracket?

ksaile
A Cooper S adds roughly $2,000 grand onto the price tag. It isn't that much more, but since my theme is trying to go as cheap as possible, with good performance, it doesn't seem to be worth the extra $2,000 for my uses. I'd still consider it, but there is something fun about wringing out the performance out of the standard 115hp. I'm not a power junky, I value handling and balance over raw power.

Who know's though, a Cooper S wouldn't be out of the question, but then I start to think about SRT 4's and the like.

Point taken. It's good you'd have what's probably the sportiest base Cooper you could get though. Good luck with that  :tp:

What Will said...do it and in green!

When my dad got the New Beetle, it was weak as hell! No juice whatsoever, but ever so fun! These small light cars are amazingly fun to drive.

The only concern, will you fit in one? How tall are you?

John works cooper?? 2-4G's more AHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA you wish. at our dealership a S is 28 CND, classsic is 21, and normal is 25. THE JW is about 55, before taxes and frieght!!!

ksaile
I'm 6' so I don't think that would be an issue. I hear they have good space in the front, the back is a little tight though.

Mr.Dave
I love the Minis! They have headlight washers too that are really cool! My friend's dad just got one and as I was taking a look at it I felt like a little kid again. I thought it'd be kinda like my Golf, but it wasn't... it was just so fun to look at, and I bet it's a blast to drive too!

Ya, the back on the beetle (because of the round design) was retarded. My head would hit and I was only 5'8 at the time.

Mr.Dave
But in all the commercials they say the round design is good!

So.....

SO THERE! :p

sure, for DWARFS! or smurfs...either of the two.

Mr.Dave
Or lexus! :fro:

ksaile
Ha ha. Yeah, I haven't gotten to sit in a mini yet, Detroit is a long ways away from where I live, so it might be awhile before I can get my ass down to check one out in person. They aren't all too common up north here.

That's sloooow. Btw: What do you like so much about the Cooper? it just seems so small and boring :?:

The fact that it fits like a glove :tp:

Sia Bani
Carbine....this is where the jackass of the forum makes fun of you since your'e only 13-14 and then says learn to drive before commenting....or something of that sort. :fro:

In any case, we have no jackasses on this forum....... so....it has more to do with the fun factor. My s4 for example, will not feel nearly as "fun" compared to the mini, for an everyday driver or even an experienced one who knows how to drive.

You'd really have to sit and drive one of these small cars to appreciate them!

Mr.Dave
Yes, or let's compare the Mini and S4 to women... The mini is a cute short blonde who's fun to take to party and while may not be very experenced, is very flexible and fun in bed.

The S4 is a former model who looks real nice and formal. She has manners and knows how to treat people and make them happy... she's kinda a MILF. But, once you get her in bed LOOK OUT! This bitch is CRAZY FUN! :boobies:

I dunno... my take on the cars.

M4A1Carbine
Actually Sia, it's 15, and I know how to drive :sarah:

And about the sitting in it part..I'm 99.6% sure I wouldn't fit in one

Mr.Dave
Yeah, I can vouche for him. Just the other day he was telling me how his dad sat him on his lap and let him steer while his dad pressed the pedals.

If I can recall correctly I do believe he said it was "the most funniest day of my life." :)

Sia Bani
Carbine, dont take offense...but you kinda seem like an ass. What you're saying is partly the truth, but you just don't see the "fun" aspect of it. I know an m3 owner that swears his 92 MR2 was the most fun car he's ever owned...and it was 0-60 at 9 seconds at best.

Lookat miata owners too! That car is amazingly fun!

ksaile
That's a fair question. I think alot of people these days are desensitized and too focused on 0-60 numbers and 1/4mile times. Alot of the things that make cars great can't be quantified in numbers. 8.5 seconds may not be as quick as alot of sporty cars out there today but it isn't that much slower. Seat of the pants 7.5-8.5 seconds isn't very noticeable. Also, it doesn't take into account the fact that the close ratio gearing almost removes the advantage that a Cooper S for example has in acceleration up to around 40mph. Now the big allure to me about this particular car is that it is basically a go cart that can seat four. Depending on which suspension, wheel and tire set up you go with, it can pull around .9g's on the skid pad, that's damn impressive. The slalom speeds shame many a super car. Last time I checked, the number of super cars that could approach 70 in a 800ft slalom could be counted on one hand. There's probably more now, but still, we're talking exotics here and I'm talking about an $18k car. The other big thing to me, as I've hinted at earlier is that for me part of the fun of driving is taking something small and underpowered and overcoming bigger, more powerfull, and perceivably faster cars through nimbleness and driving finess. Don't get me wrong, powerfull, fast accelerating cars are fun, but to me the driving character is more important.

M4A1Carbine

LoL, have you even seen my picture..I'm huge..there's only a small part of me that thinks I can fit in a Cooper. Getting in and out of a Mazda B2600i (Really small shitty truck that I now drive :( ) is a hassle to get in and out of.

ksaile
Not to forget in addition too, that the little coopers have been kicking ass in solo II against cars that you wouldn't think that they could be competitive with. A lot like the original minis that took the world by surprise when they started beating v6 powered Ford Cortinas in European rallies like the Monte Carlo and soon became a popular racing staple. Horsepower on those? Under 100 most of the time.

Mr.Dave
HAHA, your posts are at "420"... Dan would find that amusing.

But, yeah... since we are enthusists about automobiles a lot of 0-60 times don't count. Hell, it takes me 11.5 seconds to get from 0-60, but the 0-40 doesn't take all that long, so I'm happy with that. It all has to do with what you percieve as fun, I think my car's fun. KCG thinks his van's fun. Let's face it, all of RB's cars are fun! Different strokes!

Sia Bani
Btw, did you guys ever see when Jay Leno was ripping one up in the back of his studio? They coned off land about the size of a basketball court and he was doing powerslides, donuts, etc..

ksaile
Carbine, how tall are you?

I'm 6'0 weighing in at 275 LBs, you have to take into account the 3rd deminsion of my large belly hitting the steering wheel :P

i like them!

Kar man, you got an aircooled Vdub?

Lotus
OK im goin to clear this size thing up for oncve and for all. The back is tiny, good for small girls, and younger brothers/sisters/children. As for the front, im 6'2 and with the seat all the way back i couldnt reach the pedles. as for the third dimention, i am not too sure, im only 160, so no third dimenstion on me. it is desgined for anyone up to 6'8, and the dealer said that he has seen a 6'9 guy in it. it is not small, AT ALL. it blew my mind, it is like a glove inside, its great.

Arthur Dent
You could build a Stalker V6 for less than that

True, but my other use for the car would be as a year round commuter to take some road mileage of my current daily driver the cruiser. I want something that I can throw my tools in for work, take on road trips, haul sports gear in (with a roof rack), drive in the winter and summer, and that gets good mileage. I currently average 10mpg in my truck and its killing me.
