View Thread: Buy a TV or mod the Mustang???

Man this is a hard decision. I have some disposable cash and will have some more after Christmas. I was considering dumping it all into the Mustang but then I dropped by Best Buy and check out their TVs...

I was doing some shopping online today and saw this at Circuitcity.com

http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&catoid=-8041&qp=0&bookmark=bookmark_3&oid=74895#specs

65" Sony Widescreen TV

Man that thing is sweet and the prices have dropped quite a bit. My neighbor paid close to $8000 for a similar Sony TV a couple years ago. This one is $2500 on sale right now.

I'd probably wait til we move into the new house anyway, no sense in moving this beast if I don't have to.

Thoughts? $2500 would get me some decent mods on the car although if the sponsorship deal goes through, I might be able to get a bunch of stuff free of charge anyway. Hmmm

Buy the TV. Think about what GT4 would look like on it :D

Damn you! hahaha

Yeah, I would get some good use out of the TV, that's for sure.

scubie02
Thats a toughy. You'll probably get more use from the tv, since you probably watch tv every day and probably don't drive the mustang much in the winter?
Plus you can say something like "welllll, I was GOING to get myself some nice mods on the stang, but then I decided to get the tv so we could BOTH enjoy it...*SIGH*..." to the wife, and maybe you'll get some action out of it... :naughty:

mustangdriver
She's happy with our (new) 32" TV unfortunately and would live with it for life if it were up to her. So I don't think she would fall for it :(

This is a tough decision. I think if I get free mods from this shop it'll make things easier to decide.

Yeah *sigh*, thats the thing about women when it comes to stuff ike that, they just have NO imagination and are so easily satisfied...*sigh*...

:(

NightRider
I'm sure she is happy with a 32" tv, but she probably dosnt realise how much happier she'd be with a tv the size of four 32" tv's

hehe our neighbor has a 65" Sony and she's seen it. I don't think she's super impressed.

I'd buy the TV myself and not mod the Mustang until the warranty's up.

Sell her and get both :D

haha, now there's an idea :fro:

You'll get more if you sell her for parts.

Just don't sell her on Ebay, they frown down on that sort of thing there.

*Waiting on hold for lawyer*

scubie02
So your wife's seen the neighbor's...and its bigger...but she's still not that impressed...
;)

I guess TV's are one instance when size really DOESN'T matter to many girls. hehe

You could always do BOTH by buying a large tv and installing it in the car...

I can always count on a fresh perspective from you Scube :fro:

The TV would be too heavy. The goal is weight loss for the car, not vice versa! That's why you'll never see me with a boomin system in any car I plan on racing. hehe

And TV size doesn't seem to impress many girls.

Yeah, I don't know WHERE they get their priorities...

You could take out the back seat, and get one of the flat panel tv's...that shouldn't do much to weight...maybe you could get it to turn horizontal when you start driving like a big wing!

When would you find out about sponsorship? Maybe you should just hold off till you figure out if you can get mods for free...?...

Yeah, I'm taking the whole thing slow anyway because the TV isn't getting bought until we move this spring. I really don't want to have to move it, and I would rather get it delivered to the new place. Of course they are some awesome sales going on right now.

I should find out about the sponsorship details when I get my ass out there (might leave work early tomorrow). I went out after work yesterday but I missed them. Sounds like it's a done deal, but I just don't know what I'm getting yet.

scubie02
Yeah, but there will probably be better deals around christmas than in the spring...

RedLine
Get the damn tv. Knowing you, you'll sell the mustang soon anyways and buy another car. The TV on the other hand........

BUY THE TV!!!! Widescreen TVs rule!!!! Oh, remember that a widescreen TV won't eliminate black bars completely as most movies are filmed in a 1.85:1 and a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The widescreen TV has an aspect ratio at around 1.78:1. Due to some overscan, black bars on 1.85:1 movies will barely be noticable. But you'll still have some black bars on the 2.35:1 movies. But they'll be a hell of a lot smaller than they are on a regular 4x3 TV. But yeah. Go with the TV.

before deciding on a tv, check avsforums.com

they have some good info, and know where the deals are. you might be able to step up in the quality of your tv (Grand Wega, anyone?) for around the same price.

Mr.Dave
I'll be happy to take the 32 inch TV off your hands! :fro:

lexus1581
Having a 50+" for a while is great but it gets old like a novelty. I have a 52" in my basement but I think I would rather just have a regular 32" most of the time (barring movies and video games).

Go for some mods on the Stang after you find out what you are going to receive from the shop.

Hey. I happen to be a member of avsforum. I go by Ken Garrison over there. They love me over there for writing that "Widescreen TVs do NOT get rid of black bars totally" article. The main moderator had me copy and paste it to several other forums on the board and he made it a sticky. I get PMs every now and then with Thank Yous and such for explaining that. A lot of people get confused when they buy a widescreen TV and still see black bars on some of their movies. I just hope no movies will be "Formatted to fit your widescreen tv." That's all we need is 4x3 material "Tilt and Scanned" for widescreen TVs and 2.35:1 movies to be cropped to fit a widescreen TV. Pan and Scan just sucks ass no matter what aspect ratio it changes it to from another.

Rotary Boy
damn will. can't have a faster car so we go and get a bigger TV is that how it works?

I have a 52 inch plasma screen. one of the super expensive 2billion color kind.

GT3 makes me poop myself.

I can't wait for GT4.

ksaile
I'd have to go with the minority on this one. Mod the stang. TV rots the brain, mustang mods exercise the adrenal glands. :D

Take it with a grain of salt though, since I'm an anti tv proponent.

Just take some of the money you will make off the sale of your place and buy a new TV when you move into the new place. That is my plan for when I end up moving next year. That way you can just use the money you have now to mod and take a little from what you make off the sale of your current place to buy the TV and a good surround sound system. That way you have the best of both worlds!

Mr.Dave
Well, ksaile I don't watch TV much either... but movies on there would rock!

That money is all going towards Real Estate comission, closing costs and downpayment baby!

Good point! It would probably be cool. I'm all proud because a couple of weeks ago, I hooked up my 19" tv to a cobbled together stereo system and gave myself stereo sound for watching DVD's. I'm sure having a tv that is bigger then my current living room would make for a sweet movie going experience.

kcg795
Watching movies in mono just plain sucks. You gotta at least have a good stereo system. Try to go with DTS is possible. Right now, we're using the old Pro Logic system. After our POS 25 inch TV broke down, I've gotten used to watching letterbox on the 19 inch. I've even watched Ben Hur on it. :D I just watch the movie and not the bars and I get a much better movie experience than I would if the movie was formatted for Foolscreen.
