Asphalt rounds of the World Rally Championship could be phased out over the next five years, according to Shekhar Mehta of the FIA Rallies Commission.
He told Autosport magazine that the FIA is seeking to reduce the number of asphalt events on the calendar from five to four for 2004.
"The cars are a little dull on asphalt because of the high grip levels," said Mehta. "The only time they look exciting is when it rains – and then the TV pictures are spoiled anyway."
The current asphalt rounds in the championship are Monte Carlo, Germany, Italy, France and Spain.
